Qualcomm has formalized the Snapdragon 888+ (or Snapdragon 888 Plus). This new processor is an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 888 which equips all high-end smartphones of the first half of 2021. The new SoC benefits for the first time from a processor clocked at 3 GHz. It will equip smartphones from Asus, Honor, Motorola, Vivo and Xiaomi which will be unveiled before the end of the year.
This is the little surprise of the week: Qualcomm announces the arrival of the Snapdragon 888+ (also called Snapdragon 888 Plus), the improved version of the Snapdragon 888 that you currently find in all high-end smartphones of the first half of 2021. The arrival of the Snapdragon 888+ is not surprising. Several leaks, especially in the databases of benchmark tools, suggested since May that Qualcomm was preparing this new component. It’s now official.
The Snapdragon 888+ is the first to reach 3 GHz
The Snapdragon 888+ is an improved version of the Snapdragon 888. But what exactly has been improved? Two points are concerned. The first is to be found at the level Kryo 680 Prime (based on an ARM Cortex-X1), the most powerful core of the Snapdragon 888. It is now clocked at 3 GHz and no longer 2.84 GHz. A leak from Geekbench already revealed this novelty.

The second novelty is to be found on the side of artificial intelligence. The Hexagon 780 signal processor of the Snapdragon 888+ has been optimized to achieve a power of 32 teraflops, compared to 26 teraflops for the Snapdragon 888. More power means more intelligence in the interactions offered by the smartphone.
Obviously, this power offered on the one hand by the processor Kryo 680 Prime and on the other hand by theHexagon 780 (associated with the Adreno 660 GPU) brings up an important question about heat. We have seen, both in the tests of the ZenFone 8, the Mi 11i, the Legion Duel 2 or even the ROG Phone 5, a propensity of the Snapdragon 888 to heat up. A heater that is sometimes difficult to manage without dedicated help (a fan, external or internal, for example). Won’t overclocking the most powerful processor exacerbate this problem? We will find out thanks to the tests that we will carry out with the first models announced.
Here are the first five brands that will be equipped
And there will be some quickly. Indeed, Qualcomm has already announced five brands that have ordered Snapdragon 888+ to equip their new smartphones to be released before the end of 2021. These are Asus (for a possible ROG Phone), Vivo, of Motorola (certainly with the Lenovo Legion brand), Xiaomi (logically for the Black Shark brand) and… Honor ! The brand recently unveiled its first smartphones since its split from Huawei.
Apart from the two new features announced previously, the Snapdragon 888+ incorporates all the other features of the Snapdragon 888: modem Snapdragon X60, triple image processor Spectra 580, GPU Adreno 660, 3rd generation Snapdragon Elite Gaming gaming manager, etc. The Snapdragon 888+ is the third “Plus” version of a high-end chipset, after the Snapdragon 855+ and the Snapdragon 865+.
