Xiaomi is working on a method to use part of the storage space of smartphones as if it were RAM. Traces of this function were discovered in MIUI 12.5. The process, already used with computers running macOS or Windows 10, frees up RAM and speeds up the operating system.
You may be familiar with the ” virtual memory »From a computer, whether it is a Windows PC or a Mac. With this function, you can “increase” the RAM of your computer by using part of the storage. Of course, the performance of this “virtual memory” is in no way equivalent to that of physical RAM. Its use is therefore slightly different: it is mainly used to temporarily store information that is not immediately useful, thus giving priority to that which is in use.

With smartphones becoming real pocket computers, the question of RAM management is increasingly important. It is important for three reasons. Because operating systems are more and more complete. Because the applications are more and more greedy. And because we are using more and more parallel processes. All of this consumes RAM.
Use storage to increase smartphone RAM
Some brands of smartphones are working on improving the management of RAM and adapting the principle of virtual memory to telephony. A developer has discovered in the source code of MIUI 12.5 (the version being deployed to models already marketed of the Chinese brand) traces of a similar functionality whose goal would be tobring fluidity to the interface, but also to reduce application open times.
Here is how it would work. The smartphone has a fixed amount of RAM. If this RAM is saturated, the OS would temporarily deport part of the information it contains to mass storage, thus freeing up space for the applications in use. This is made possible because smartphone storage is similar to a PC SSD : access is quick. Note that Xiaomi is not the first brand to work on the subject. Vivo and OnePlus are two more. At Vivo, the functionality is already in use on the X60 which benefits virtually from 3 GB additional RAM.
