Macs aren’t known for their number of USB ports. Not to mention that we always need more! Mouse, keyboard, headset, external drive, iPhone, Apple Watch… you have to make a choice. Having a USB hub on your Mac, a USB hub, or more colloquially a USB power strip, is handy. It remains to be seen whether it is efficient.

Satechi Multiport Adapter

This elegantly designed USB hub is easily transportable since it measures 16 x 6.4 x 10.5 cm. It is not the fastest since its transfer speed is 4 Gigabits per second, but it is quite complete. Indeed, the Satechi USB hub has 6 ports:

  • 3x USB 3.1;
  • micro SD;
  • HDMI for 4K displays at 30Hz;
  • Gigabit Ethernet up to 1 Gb / s.

Like most hubs, it’s plug-and-play, you plug it in and use it directly.

Elgato Thunderbolt 3 dock

Better than a USB hub for Mac, a Thunderbolt hub! Even more practical when you know that the USB ports of Mac M1 also do Thunderbolt. The advantage lies in the speed, the transfer speed at 40 Gbit / s.

You are not going to gain in USB port, but in ports, in general. Indeed, it has the following ports:

  • Gigabit Ethernet;
  • 3x USB 3.0 (including one on the back);
  • 2x Thunderbolt 3;
  • Display Port.

In addition, you will find a microphone port and a headphone port on the back.

If ejecting all devices correctly one by one before unplugging them makes you bored, with this hub you can eject all connected devices with one click.

With Thunderbolts, you increase compatibility with 5K displays and dual displays.

This Elgato hub is self-powered. Thanks to this, it can charge your mobile devices even if your Mac is turned off.

It is not of excessive size since it is 20 x 2.9 x 8 cm for 0.3 kg.

It can also charge a MacBook Pro with these 85 W.

It’s all great, but it comes at a price.

The USB hub will not be able to deliver more current than your Mac is capable of delivering, however it may redistribute it more or less well depending on the product. Some Mac supports may include a USB hub.
