How do I remove a Windows license to put it back on another computer?

Do you want to sell your computer? But you would like to be able to keep your Windows license to install it on another computer?

So here is how to de-register a Windows license from a PC and how to reactivate it on another computer afterwards. Note that this works on Windows 7 and Windows 8. I have not tested on versions earlier than these OS.

Launch a command prompt in Administrator. Then enter the following command:

slmgr / dlv

You will then get the following window which will display, among other things, your Windows Activation ID.

Unregister this installation ID with the following command, including your own activation number:

slmgr / upk 9e473b6b-d000-0000-000000000000000

Now your computer is clean, and Windows is unlicensed. You can resell it, give it away, or do whatever you want with it.

Then, to replace the license on another PC, all you have to do is open a terminal again and enter the following command, followed by your license key (the one stuck on the tower or in the Windows box )

And then activate this Windows with the command:

slmgr / ato

And reboot!

Note that you can also do this via a graphical interface by launching the Windows activation module with the following command in a command prompt launched as Administrator:

slui 3
