which SSDs are compatible with PS5?

Finally, the PS5 allows the addition of an M.2 NVMe SSD to increase its storage capacity. However, some compatibility criteria should be taken into account. We recommend that you check them first and then in the second part of this purchase guide to see which M.2 SSDs are compatible with your Sony console.

Although the PS5 will officially support M.2 SSD support as of July 29, this new feature is currently being released through the beta version of the console firmware. Only certain users in the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France can currently take advantage of it.

What are the prerequisites for installing an M.2 SSD on a PS5?

Sony has already announced some compatibility criteria to make the M.2 type SSD compatible with the PS5. Before proceeding with the purchase, you must comply with the following conditions:

User interface : M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 x4 SSD

Capacity 250 GB – 4 TB

Cooling structure : To use the M.2 SSD with your PS5 console, it must have an efficient heat dissipation system with a heat sink, such as a heat sink. You can add one to the M.2 SSD itself, whether it is single-sided or double-sided. There are also M.2 SSDs with a built-in cooling structure (such as heat sinks).

Consecutive reading speed : at least 5500 MB / s is recommended

Module width : 22 mm (up to 25 mm with heat sink)

Form : 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 (type M.2). The first two digits are the width and the rest the length.

Socket type : Connection 3 (M key)

Dimensions : The overall dimensions with the cooling structure must not exceed 110 mm (length) x 25 mm (width) x 11.25 mm (height). For the length of the SSD, they can be 80 mm, 42 mm, 60 mm, 80 mm or 110 mm, depending on the shape. A 22 mm wide M.2 SSD is required for the width, and the total size with the auxiliary cooling structure must not exceed 25 mm. Below you will find all the technical information about the dimensions of Sony M.2 SSDs.

Which M.2 SSDs are compatible with the PS5?

M.2 SSDs that are officially compatible with the PS5

Currently, only a few M.2 SSDs are officially compatible with the PS5. We have listed them below. In general, the performances they present are almost similar. The Seagate FireCuda 530 is slightly more powerful than the WD SN850 and Gigabyte Aorus 7000s because it offers speeds of 7,300 MB / s and 7,000 MB / s in the latter two.

Western Digital Black SN850

WD black SN850

The Western Digital Black SN850 4th generation SSD, confirmed for compatibility by Sony chief architect Mark Cerby, offers read speeds of 7,000 MB / s, and this capacity ranges from 500GB to 2TB, making this model a perfect fit for a Sony console. Here are the prices Amazon offers based on storage capacity:

  • 500 GB for € 185.02
  • 1 TB for € 322.07
  • 2 TB for € 559.69

In addition, it also includes a heat sink and meets the required dimensional requirements to be installed in the console.

Gigabyte Aorus 7000S

Gigabyte Aorus 7000s

The manufacturer Gibabyte also offers an M.2 SSD solution that is compatible with the PS5. This is the Gigabyte Aorus 7000S PCI-Express 4.0 x4 interface model you need to turn to. Just like the WD Black SN850, it offers read speeds of 7,000 MB / s and 6850 MB / s of writing (depending on the model).

Its radiator is made of nanocarbon and aluminum to improve heat output and always keep performance high. The 1 TB version is available from € 242.85 on Amazon.

Seagate FireCuda 530

Firecuda 530 Seagate

The most powerful, but also the first officially certified SS5-compatible SS5, the Seagate Firecuda 530 offers read speeds of up to 7300 MB / s, which is significantly more than Sony recommends 5500 MB / s.

Like the models shown above, it is equipped with a cooling element to ensure optimal cooling. It is available in several storage capacities ranging from 500GB to 4TB and prices range from € 180 to € 1,180.

M.2 SSDs that are unofficially compatible with the PS5

Now that we’ve checked the officially compatible SSDs for the PS5, here are some models that are also supported by the Sony console. The SSD does not need to be certified to be compatible with the PS5 for it to work properly with the latter. It only needs to meet the minimum requirements set by Sony.

Suitable models include Samsung 980 Pro, PNY XLR8 CS3140 or even Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus (supplied without heat sink). Finally, note that SSDs in M.2 SATA format are not compatible with PS5.

Samsung 980 pro

Samsung 980 pro

The Samsung 980 Pro SSD is in 2280 format and offers a read speed of 7000 MB / s, so it is compatible without any problems with the Sony console. Just like the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus, you need to equip yourself with a separate technical cooling element, as Samsung does not offer it with an SSD. This SSD is available in the following storage capacities: 250 GB, 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB. The price ranges are about 80–450 euros.

PNY XLR8 CS3140

PNY XLR8 CS3140

Another M.2 SSD model that is unofficially compatible with the PS5, the PNY XLR8 CS3140. The latter has been available since the beginning of 2021 and has proven to be the fastest and most efficient on the market. The latter is therefore logically compatible with the PS5. Pay attention to the supplied heat sink, as it does not fit the Sony console depending on the model. It can be found in storage capacities of 1, 2 and 4 TB between 230 and 690 €.

Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus

Sabrent Rocket 4 plus

If you are not yet familiar with Sabrent, know that it is a manufacturer that offers SSDs at very aggressive prices, but still with very high quality. The Rocket 4 Plus model is an M.2 SSD that offers read speeds that can theoretically reach 7,000 MB / s, ensuring compatibility with the PS5.

Just like the Samsung 980 Pro, it does not have a heat sink, so it needs to be equipped separately. While the brand offers one, it looks like it’s too big to install on a PS5. The price level for the 1 TB model is € 219.99, for the 2 TB model € 469.99 and finally for the 4 TB model € 999.00.
